Acupuncture FAQs:

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a form of traditional Chinese medicine that has been used for thousands of years to promote general wellness and healing. During treatment, needles are placed in specific points. This stimulates the body’s natural healing mechanisms.

What are Acupuncture needles like?

Sterile and incredibly thin, acupuncture needles come in varying lengths and sizes; the specifics of the needles utilized in your treatment depend on your condition and which acupuncture points are targeted.

Do Acupuncture needles hurt?

Acupuncture needles are very thin and are typically inserted just one to three millimeters into the body. While they are being placed, some people feel nothing. Others report minimal discomfort. During treatment, you may feel nothing at all. Alternately, you may experience sensations like warmth or tingling as the energy balances out.

How many treatments will I need?

The number of treatments needed varies from patient to patient. Factors that influence how many treatments are required include the condition being treated, its severity and duration, your overall health, and your personal health goals. The number of acupuncture treatments you will need begins with an initial consultation with Dr. Marcia. As a general rule, many patients notice that the symptoms of their condition begin to improve within three to ten treatments. While the symptoms may decrease during your first few appointments, additional visits may be necessary to alleviate the cause of the condition.

How long will the treatments last?

Everyone responds differently to acupuncture, so the exact timing depends on your body’s needs. The insertion of the needles typically happens fairly quickly. Once the needles are in place, you can simply relax while they draw in energy. After 10 to 40 minutes, the needles are removed.

Acupuncture points can be found on both the front and back of the body. If points on your front are being targeted, you will be asked to rest on your back. When needles are inserted in the back, you will be asked to lie on your stomach. Sometimes only one side of the body is treated. On occasions when both the front and back are to be treated, there will be two rounds of treatment.

Chiropractic FAQs:

What is chiropractic?

Chiropractic care is a natural treatment that focuses on maintaining a balance between all of the body’s systems: muscular, skeletal and neurological. It also addresses the way that these systems work together to heal the body.

Who can benefit?

Anyone who suffers from back and neck discomfort, joint tingling or any type of chronic pain will benefit from chiropractic care. People who are interested in holistic health and wellness will be especially excited about chiropractic’s non-pharmaceutical approach to healing.

What is an adjustment?

A chiropractic adjustment, or spinal manipulation, is a procedure where a trained specialist (chiropractor) uses their hands, a small instrument or a specialized table to apply a controlled force to a certain area of the body. Regular adjustments correct spinal alignment and increase your body’s efficiency and function. They also feel great.

Why would I go?

Neck, shoulder and lower back pain are the usual reasons that people visit a chiropractor. Your chiropractor is a practitioner of holistic healthcare and will be able to help and advise you in many health and wellness areas.

What should I expect my first time?

For your first visit, you can expect a thorough examination including a medical history, a physical exam with particular attention being paid to the spine, and possibly other tests, including x-rays. Dr. Marcia will assess your complaint, diagnose the problem and discuss a treatment plan with you. An adjustment, electrical muscle stimulation, cold laser therapy or some other form of heat treatment or massage may be a part of the treatment that you receive. Expect Dr. Marcia to discuss with you at length about ways for you to live a healthier life, with positive emphasis on things that you are doing right, and encouragement to change things that will improve your physical well-being.

What kind of results can I expect?

After an adjustment or other chiropractic procedure, you may experience minor side effects like soreness for a few days, but these will soon fade. Generally, you can expect to notice a marked improvement after the first few trips to Doc Marcia Acupuncture and Chiropractic.
